Heat Management of VSD Installations

Variable Speed Drives (VSD’s) typically produce around 3% in heat losses when running at their rated load. This can present some challenges when planning how to best manage the heat that accumulates within the switch room.

It is common for some plant rooms to combat the heat with air conditioning systems, however this can become an innefficient way of managing the issue.Air conditioners are typically expensive, energy consuming, and become an additional maintenance item in the plant.

Modern VSD design has managed to deal with this by separating the drives control section from the heat producing power section by means of segregation. This allows the section of the drive that produces 90% of the heat to be managed and the heat diverted away from the control zone.

Electronic Power Solutions can assist you with the switch room design with heat loss and airflow data for the ranges of drives we support.
